Attachment Styles in Practice: How Understanding Patterns Improves Therapy

Our past experiences matter a lot in developing meaningful relationships. In the world of psychology, an attachment theory involves a framework that provides valuable insights into the patterns developed in early life. Your attachment styles are not merely a factor affecting your personal growth. Professional therapists try to identify the deep-seated patterns to unlock a new level of insight. It opens the path for better treatment of your psychological issues. Let us explore why therapists should understand attachment styles in practice for better outcomes.

Various Types of Attachment Styles

During childhood, your bond with your primary caregivers influences your future relationships. In other words, early bonds develop rules on how you would interpret relationships during adulthood. The most important attachment styles are:

Preoccupied – Anxious (preoccupied) attachment is found in children due to inconsistent parenting. Many kids lack self-esteem and develop a fear of rejection in relationships. What’s more, they become too preoccupied with their partner’s actions. Constant reassurance is highly essential to manage these people. However, some people with these issues can adapt to a secure attachment style.

Secure – Individuals with this attachment style are social and self-contented. They can express feelings and build long-lasting relationships. Parents must try to keep their kids securely attached to avoid issues in the future. Secure attachment styles ensure comfort with intimacy and a better connection in a relationship.

Avoidant – Dismissive or avoidant attachment styles may tempt you to stay emotionally distant in a relationship. People with this attachment issue cannot maintain intimacy. This problem occurs when parents (primary caregivers) are strict and do not expect independence in their children.

Disorganized – Childhood fear and abuse can lead to disorganized attachment in adults. Individuals with these issues do not easily trust others. They even experience both avoidant and anxious behaviors at times. But, proper treatment can help them recover from these feelings.

Why Do Therapists Need to Recognize Attachment Styles?

Professional therapists try to identify your attachment pattern to provide the best therapy. It enables them to explain the reasons behind your discomfort in intimacy. There are several other reasons for understanding your attachment styles for therapeutic purposes.

Build a Therapeutic Connection

A good bond between a client and a therapist is crucial for achieving the goal. By recognizing attachment dynamics, experts can suggest better solutions. They can make an anxious person feel confident and comfortable.

Promote Self-Awareness

Therapists aim to help clients have an insight into behavioral and emotional patterns. Clients can also interpret the reasons behind their relationship issues. For instance, anxious individuals can understand that their inconsistent childhood caregiving has resulted in fear of abandonment. Thus, by reflecting on the past, they can establish a connection to the present problems.

Customize Treatment Plans

After identifying the client’s attachment style, therapists customize treatment approaches. They help anxious clients develop emotional regulation skills. Similarly, avoidant clients can learn the way to develop emotional intimacy.

All in All

Attachment patterns are not mere abstract concepts but are related to the way you connect with others. They influence your emotional wellbeing in the future years. Therapists with knowledge about attachment theory can detect the root cause of your relationship struggles. They foster secure attachments and improve the therapeutic process.
